Local Places for Nature is a Welsh Government grant scheme promoting access to nature on your doorstep providing capital grants to create and restore local nature. °¬²æAƬ Council has been using the grant to deliver the following projects across the borough:
- Biodiversity Enhancements in green spaces
- Woodland Management
- Grassland Networks Project (include Devils Bits scabious planting project, Barn Owl Project, Long term vision of the project)
- Community Orchards
The projects aim to maintain, restore, create and enhance green spaces into havens for the local wildlife and people to enjoy.
°¬²æAƬ Council has secured a further two years Local Places for Nature Grant (2025-2027), and will enable the continuation of the above projects, but it will also see a focus on developing a ‘Linking Landscapes’ Project. The objective of the Linking Landscapes Project is to collaboratively work across °¬²æAƬ and Torfaen Local Nature Partnership area, demonstrating a landscape approach to create and enhance resilient ecological networks that will contribute to the recovery of keystone species such as butterflies and moths, and other indicator species that are in decline. The project aims to:
- Improve the Diversity, Extent, Condition, Connectivity and Adaptability of habitats
- Enhance Green Spaces
- Create habitats for key protected indicator species
- Connect People
- Monitor Sites
