Continued investment in roads and funding secured for major A4046 upgrade

The Council is continuing to invest in the borough’s roads, including a major £2.5 million improvement scheme for the A4046 Aberbeeg to Cwm road.

The work on the A4046 between Aberbeeg and Cwm will deliver essential upgrades such as improved drainage, full carriageway resurfacing, and enhanced safety measures to protect the route long term.

Funding for the scheme has been awarded through the Welsh Government’s Regional Transport Fund, with work expected to begin towards the end of the summer.

Alongside this, the Council continues to deliver an extensive resurfacing programme across °¬²æAƬ, supported by both Welsh Government and local funding. Since September, nearly 50 roads have been resurfaced, with additional structural repairs completed on safety barriers and bridges. The roads included in the first phase of the programme have been selected following detailed inspections and engagement with local ward members.

Between April 2025 and April 2030, £5.4 million of capital funding is being invested in resurfacing works. This includes £2million of Council funding being brought forward for delivery over the next two years.

An extra £112,000 has been committed to road repairs and maintenance across the borough in 2025/26, supplementing the existing £1million plus revenue budget allocated for ongoing maintenance annually. This additional funding will be focused on urgent issues identified by highways inspectors.

This means that between April 2025 and April 2030, over £10million in total will be spent on the borough’s roads.

Potholes remain a widespread challenge across the UK, with recent prolonged wet weather further damaging road surfaces and slowing repair efforts.

Councillor Tommy Smith, the Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Environment Services, said:

“We are listening to our communities and continuing to invest in our roads here in °¬²æAƬ, working with Welsh Government. By identifying and securing additional funding, we are able to accelerate essential repairs and deliver an ambitious resurfacing programme that will protect many of our roads for years to come.

“The A4046 between Aberbeeg and Cwm is a vital route for our residents and local businesses, so we very much welcome the funding that will allow us to carry out essential improvements and secure the long-term future of this key road. We will work closely with local communities in developing proposals for the temporary traffic management arrangements, to ensure that disruption to traffic flows, along this main arterial route, is kept to a minimum, with timings and diversion routes being well publicised.â€
