The Council will be offering flood gates to residents living in properties identified as being most at risk in the communities affected by previous storms.
Through a combination of Welsh Government and Council funding, the homes which are identified in Llanhilleth and Cwm will be offered the gates and associated fitting works free of charge. The Council will be in touch with those living in eligible properties over the next few months.
The scheme has been made possible through a successful bid for £97,750 to the Welsh Government’s Small Grants Scheme, together with a contribution from the Council’s budget which has been allocated to address flooding issues.
°¬˛ćAƬs in Llanhilleth and Cwm have been affected by flooding in two major storms in the past few years, and with winters becoming more severe which can affect river levels, the Council is working with the communities to minimise risk where possible.
Councillor Tommy Smith, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Environment, said:
“As part of the °¬˛ćAƬ Deal we are committed to working with the communities that have previously been devastated by flooding. We have identified money within our own budget this year, as well as continuing to apply for Welsh Government funding wherever possible.
“We have carried out extensive drainage improvement works in both villages, improved community resilience through training and by providing resources and by offering these flood gates we hope to provide even more reassurance to residents during future weather events.”
