Panel Celebrates Bevan’s Oratory

Aneurin Bevan will always be remembered as the founder of the National Health Service but he is also considered as one of parliament’s greatest orators and debaters. A new interpretation panel now celebrates his remarkable ability to connect with audiences, construct compelling arguments, challenge opponents and inspire support for his causes. These achievements are made all the more extraordinary by the severe stammer he battled from childhood.

The panel is located at the Aneurin Bevan Memorial Stones, high on the hillside crest between Tredegar and Ebbw Vale. The location of Waun Y Pound held special significance for Nye as it was here, he would address large crowds at election rallies, and it was here that his memorial service was conducted by his personal friend Dr. Donald Soper.

Cllr John Morgan, Cabinet Member - Economy & Place, said, ‘Aneurin Bevan is not just a local hero nor even just a Welsh hero but the hero for the nation and the whole world. Visitors come to this site to reflect on his legacy and the principles he championed — fighting injustice and improving the lives of working people.

‘The panel features some of his most memorable quotations, many of which remain just as relevant today as when they were first spoken.

‘Nye died on 6th July 1960, the Memorial Stones were unveiled by Michael Foot on 6 July 1972, and now, on 6 July 2026, we unveiled this new interpretation panel so that visitors can better understand both the significance of this place and the remarkable individual it commemorates.’

Nick Smith MP said:

‘Nye lived with a severe stammer and spent much of his life overcoming the challenges it presented. Through my previous work with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, I understand how difficult such a condition can be.

‘Bevan developed strategies to manage his stammer, including expanding his vocabulary so that if he struggled with one word, he could readily substitute another. Not only did he overcome this obstacle, but the techniques he developed helped shape him into a formidable politician and an exceptional public speaker.

‘This panel is a fitting tribute to Nye’s achievements and sends a powerful message to our community that determination and perseverance can help people overcome even the greatest challenges.’
